Armed Response

A Morningside bicycle thief, who thought he had got away, enjoyed just a short ride down the road before an alert armed response officer caught up with him and promptly apprehended him at the weekend.
Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the alert officer had noticed the suspect walking along Farrell Road in Morningside near the entrance of a property at around 11.15am on Sunday. “A short while later, he spotted him riding a blue and orange mountain bike up the same road and he decided to investigate,” he said.
“When the suspect noticed our reaction officer had seen him, he tried to flee the scene and lost control of the bike in Hollander Crescent, crashing into a side mirror of a vehicle. He got up and tried to flee on foot, but our officer cornered him with the assistance of a back up vehicle not far from the scene.
He was handed over to the Berea SAPS who attended the crime scene.”
Jackson said a resident in Goodricke Road had identified the bicycle as her property.
In an earlier incident in Glenwood last Tuesday at around 4.30pm, an armed response officer apprehended a suspect after he jumped over the fence of a property in Edmonds Road to steal a hosepipe.
“The resident gave a description of the suspect to our officer, who then tracked down the alleged thief and apprehended him conveniently close to the police station in Deodar Road,” he said.
Jackson said the resident opened a case of theft at the Umbilo Police Station where the suspect was handed over to police.
