Armed Response

Outdoor beams false alarming is a real thing. If you’re not at home and they go off, it’s safe to say that you feel panicked and unnecessary suspense.
If you are at home and you know the dog or the cat activated the beams and that no one has tried to break in, then it’s just a real annoyance for your ears, the neighbours and all the nearby pets too.
If it’s happened to you before it will happen again unless outdoor beam owners find out about the necessary measures that can minimise outdoor beam false alarm hazards.
After discussing what reasons cause outdoor beams to activate with the technical manager at Blue Security Suren Munoo, we want to let you know about the bizarre reasons and solutions to your outdoor beam difficulties.
1. Ants in your passives – I guess it’s better than having ants in your pants. This happens throughout the year but mainly in winter. Suren Munoo suggests, “Like most creatures, the ants get cold and look for warmth which is provided by the outdoor passives. The ants then crawl into the passive for warmth and walk over the passive lens causing the beams to activate and the alarm to trigger.
Prevent this from happening by scattering Blue Death powder on the area surrounding the passive to deter the ants.”
2. Braais/webers – Braais create heat and we all know that when there are heat waves in Durban, there are more false alarms. Think of the heat conducted by the braai as a mini heat wave. Suren Munoo explains that, “If the braai is too close to an outdoor passive, the heat wave will distort the infrared rays in the passive, causing the beams to activate and the alarm to siren.
Prevent this from happening by placing your braai/weber a good distance away from your outdoor passives.”
3. Battery maintenance – If you have wireless beams that depend on a battery for power, Suren Munoo mentions, “The lower the battery life of the beam gets, the less it performs to its full potential. The battery life lasts about 18 months, provided there isn’t a load shedding schedule in tact which would then cause the battery to burn out faster.”
Prevent this from happening by find out what percentage your battery is sitting on, book a technician to find out.
4. Monkeys/Hadedas – This one might seem obvious but the one solution is priceless.
“Prevent this from happening by not leaving food lying around and adding rubber snakes to your garden landscape to potentially deter them from entering the property.” Munoo says.
5 . Vegetation – Overgrown plants, trees and bushes that sway in the wind can brush up against the beam sensors causing a false activation.
Prevent this from happening by trimming plants, bushes and trees at least twice a month.
Besides the monkeys, pets, birds and overgrown shrubbery, have you discovered any other reasons why your outdoor beams have been activating? If so, send through your answers to siren@bluesecurity.co.za for us to add into another write-up.
