Blue Security Team Demonstrates Bravery in Armed Confrontation in Somerset Park

Blue Security Team Demonstrates Bravery in Armed Confrontation in Somerset Park, Umhlanga Durban, 16 September 2025.  At approximately 10:15 am today, Blue Security armed response officers were attending to an alarm activation in Midsomer Drive, Somerset Park, Umhlanga.

The officer observed a suspicious individual loitering outside a property, which was under the protection of another security provider. When our Blue Team approached, the suspect fled in a white Toyota Starlet. Our officers pursued the vehicle and managed to intercept it in Somerset Drive.

Upon interception, the suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire on the Blue Security team. Our officers, trained to protect both themselves and the community, returned fire to neutralise the immediate threat. Moments later, a second vehicle, a Toyota double cab, arrived at the scene. One of its occupants, dressed in a balaclava and wearing a bulletproof vest, discharged rounds from a rifle towards our personnel.

Both vehicles fled the area following the exchange. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the community remains safe thanks to the swift action and expertise of our Blue Security officers.

“We are deeply grateful for the courage, professionalism, and commitment displayed by our team under extremely dangerous circumstances,” said CEO, Henk van Bemmelen. “Their bravery today reflects our ongoing promise of Protecting Generations, ensuring that families, businesses and communities in Durban can live with peace of mind.”

Blue Security is fully cooperating with the South African Police Service (SAPS) as investigations into the incident continue. Additional patrols and tactical support have been deployed in Somerset Park, Umhlanga and surrounding areas to reinforce safety and reassure residents.

We commend our officers for their valour, expertise, and dedication to safeguarding lives, and we assure our clients and communities that their security remains our top priority.
