How Can You Get the Most Out of Our Crime Map?

Your safety should always be a forethought. Whether you’re moving to a new home, starting a new job or just want to visit a new restaurant – use the Crime Map to stay informed on the crime trends in any area.

Reflecting all positive incidents reported to our control centre, our Crime Map uses this data to deliver the latest crime trends in an interactive and informative way. Enter in any Durban based location to view the nearby incidents, represented by the various coloured dots, then click on “Crime Report” to analyse trends in the area.

Use the Crime Map to: Stay Safe at Home

Looking to move home or just want to know more about the crime trends in your area?

Put in the location of the property, set the radius to 1 km to get a clear view of the incidents occurring closest to the property. Widen the radius in order to get a better understanding of the general area.

Adjust the date range from anywhere between the past 3 days and the past 6 months. Worried about the kids being home alone during the holidays? Enter a custom date range to check for trends in the area during those periods.

You’re probably interested in seeing all home related incidents? Scroll down to “Incident Type” and select all ‘residential’ and trespassing incidents. Or maybe you don’t have a garage? Select “Theft of a vehicle” to evaluate the safety of parking in the street. You can also use map to search for nearby police stations, hospitals, fire stations and neighbourhood watches – important information to have during an emergency.

Use the Crime Map to: Keep the Kids Safe

Set filters to specify the time your children spend at school.

Kids spend most of their time at school – get to know the area and its crime trends.

After entering the location of the school, set the radius to 1 km to get a clear view of the incidents that have occurred closest to the school. Do your children walk to get a bus or a taxi? Widening the radius will give you a better overview of the area and allow you to look at the routes they take to school and home.

Adjust the days of the week and time range to view crime trends during the specific periods in which your children are at school, particularly when arriving and departing. You don’t want to frighten your children, but you do need to educate them on the necessary safety precautions to take at all times.

Maybe the kids have weekend events that require you to park your vehicle outside the school all morning. Navigate to “Incident type“, select “Theft of a motor vehicle”, “Theft out of a motor vehicle” and “Hijackings” to view all vehicle related incidents and take the necessary precautions.

Use the Crime Map to: Stay Safe at Work

It’s often the place we spend most of our day – stay safe by getting to know the area better.

Enter the location of your work, set the radius to 1 km to see incidents occurring closest to your place of work and widen the radius to see the incidents and crime trends that occur along your route to work.

Adjust the days of the week and time range to the time you spend at work, or even to the time you arrive and depart from work to check for trends in the area during those periods.
All business related incidents might interest you the most. Under the “Incident type” filter and select all ‘business’ incidents. View the “crime report” to evaluate high risk days and hours to plan your day accordingly.

Stay in the Loop – Set Up Email Alerts

So now you know how to get the most out of the Crime Map trend reports, but do you know you can set up email alerts? Once you’ve registered you can easily set up daily, weekly or monthly alerts for a specific location. So if you work in Pinetown, live in Waterfall and the kids go to school in Hillcrest, create a separate location for each of these places and be notified if crime took place nearby.
