Pinetown Armed Robbery: Cash-in-Transit Employee Survives Shootout

A cash-in-transit employee was shot and injured during an armed robbery in Pinetown on Monday morning.
“The incident occurred when a gang of five armed suspects entered a supermarket as cash-in-transit employees were busy depositing cash into an ATM,” said Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios.
“The entire gang, which was armed with firearms, held up the cash-in-transit employees. One of the employees was shot in the leg during an exchange of gunfire when three shots were fired by the suspects,” Mathios said. “He was shot in the right leg whilst, unsuccessfully, trying to run away with the trolley which was carrying four boxes of cash,” he said.
“An undisclosed amount of cash was taken by the suspects who were seen fleeing in a white Toyota double-cab with no number-plate,” he said. “Investigations are continuing by Pinetown SAPS and a team of detectives on site. Paramedics also attended the scene to treat the injured victim,” he said.
In a separate incident on Sunday, a store employee was held up by three men during an armed robbery in New Germany. “The three suspects, one of whom was armed with a knife, entered the store just after 3pm. The gang fled with an undisclosed number of watches,” Mathios said. “The incident is under investigation,” he said.
In another incident at the weekend, a security guard at a Westmead business complex was threatened and robbed by two armed suspects.
“Blue Security responded to an alarm activation shortly after 6pm on Saturday evening and, on arrival, discovered that the security guard had been robbed,” Mathios said. “The two intruders were armed, one with a firearm and the other with a screwdriver. Investigations showed that they entered the premises by cutting the fence at the rear of the property,” he said.
“The suspects then proceeded to where the security guard was stationed, held him up and robbed him of two cellphones and a pair of boots,” he said. “The men fled the premises after also removing a broken car battery which was underneath a nearby carport,” he said. Investigations are continuing.
