Armed Response

CCTV footage assisted in apprehending a trespasser in Morningside on Saturday morning.
“The incident occurred when Blue Security reaction officers investigated a panic activation in Percy Osborne Road, Morningside just before 6am on Saturday,” said Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios. “A thorough inspection of the property revealed that a suspect had attempted to break in to the front of the premises but was disturbed by the alarm being activated,” Mathios said.
“After viewing the CCTV footage and getting a good description of the intruder our reaction officers set off to scour the area in search of the suspect.” The two reaction officers were successful a short while later when they spotted the suspect on Umgeni Road, apprehended him and took him back to the scene of the crime. “The property owner was able to make a positive identification based on the CCTV footage.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect had been on the property since around 9pm on Friday night,” Mathios said. Durban Central SAPS members responded and took the suspect into custody. “Investigations are continuing in following up on intelligence which might link the suspect to other crimes in the area,” Mathios said.
In a separate incident on the other side of the city an alert Blue Security tactical officer successfully arrested a suspect in connection with bicycle theft. “Our tactical officer’s suspicions were confirmed when he apprehended and questioned a suspect seen carrying a bicycle in the Bluff area,” Mathios said. “The man initially said he had found the bicycle lying in the road. Further questioning revealed that the bicycle had been removed from a property a short distance away.
“When our reaction officer transported the suspect to the property the owner confirmed that he was the owner of the missing bicycle and that a second bike had also been removed,” Mathios said. The suspect was handed over to Brighton Beach SAPS for further processing and investigations. “Both these arrests were possible with the assistance of CCTV footage, activated alarms and the quick reactions of our officers,” Mathios said.
