Contact crimes escalate in Durban North

A Durban North woman was lucky to escape uninjured when a gang of armed robbers held her up outside a business premises in the early hours of this morning.
Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the woman had just locked up the business at around 2am when a gang of five men ambushed her. “The gang was armed with firearms and knives and grabbed her handbag containing three cellphones, her car keys and cash before fleeing the scene,” he said. “Greenwood Park SAPS attended the scene of the crime. No injuries were reported.”
Jackson said the incident was the third contact crime reported in the Durban North area over the past week.
Armed robbers driving a silver VW Golf shot at a La Lucia man’s vehicle as he drove home from the bank in Umhlanga Rocks Drive at noon yesterday, and on Thursday shots were fired during a hijacking in Desai Crescent in Effingham Heights.
“In the first incident the motorist managed to escape safely to his home without injury and the robbers fled the scene.
“In the earlier incident a woman dropped off her grandson at home when armed robbers in a red Corsa stopped behind her. They fired three shots and hijacked her of her car,” he said. “There were no injuries reported during the incidents.”
Jackson advised residents to be extra vigilant when arriving and leaving home and work.
“Always make sure there is no-one following you home. Take a drive around the block and if you are still concerned about someone lurking near your property, call the police and your security company to investigate,” he said. Before turning into your driveway or opening up the gate, check the outside of your property for suspicious persons.
Jackson advised business owners to be vigilant especially when conducting banking at month end and to make sure there was no-one following them to and from the bank.
