Armed Response

You’ve spring cleaned your home from top to bottom, put together every puzzle in existence, baked enough banana bread to feed an army and you’re wondering what more you could do to stay indoors and stay entertained? After tasting sweet-sweet freedom in the advanced level 3 of lockdown we know staying inside much longer seems like a crazy idea, but as we South Africans brace for our predicted peak in COVID19 cases it might just be the most sensible action to take.
In the past, we have put together a bucket list for all things Durbanites should do at least once in their lives and we hope you got the chance to tick a few off before life in lockdown. If not we’re sure you’ll jump at the first chance you get when the doors to Durban fully reopen, however, in the meantime we’ve got a different kind of bucket list you can tackle whilst you dodge the pandemic peak.
Binge watched every series Netflix has to offer? Well, this is a show unlike any other! If you’re a traveler who’s post-lockdown list includes seeing the Northern lights then this might just be your favourite item on the list. With a camera positioned directly under the aurora oval, Polar Bear International and Explore broadcasts a live stream that lets you marvel at the multi-coloured phenomenon, all from the comfort of your couch. Since Canada is seven hours behind South African time and the Northern Lights can only bee seen at night, you may have to stay up a little late or wake up up a little early to witness this spectacular view live. However, ‘live view’ videos can also be rewinded so you can watch at your convenience and still catch some beauty sleep!
Zooniverse is a people-powered research initiative that enables anyone to take part in cutting edge research, unlock answers, and contribute to real discoveries. As species whose population is in decline researchers are asking the question – why? And thus began the Penguin Watch project in which anyone older than 5 can contribute to conservation by counting penguins on aerial photos or time-lapse cameras, all for a good cause! And if that doesn’t float your iceberg – there are plenty other projects to pick from.
There’s no doubt you’ve already baked up a storm, but it’s time to give the banana bread a break! Get ready to impress your friends at those post-lockdown dinner parties by learning the techniques to making pasta from an authentic Italian Grandmother – Nonna Nerina.
