Durban North businessman mercilessly murdered by gunmen

Armed suspects shot dead a Durban North businessman at his business premises in Everest Road earlier this evening.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said a resident who lives in the neighbourhood called Blue Security to respond to the incident earlier this evening at around 5.20pm. “When our officer arrived at the scene, we found that the business owner had been shot inside the business premises. He was in a critical condition when our officer arrived.”
“It is alleged that three suspects arrived at the premises and asked for the business owner,” Mathios said. “They were directed to where he was in the building and a scuffle broke out between the three suspects and the business owner. It is alleged that two shots were fired, one hitting the business man in the chest and the other in the head. Paramedics from Crisis Medical declared him dead at the scene.”
“Blue Security secured the crime scene where the Durban North SAPS are investing the shooting.”
North Durban Victim Support attended the scene to assist the staff with crisis debriefing.
In a yet another Durban business robbery, agang of armed robbers pretending to be customers held up staff this afternoon.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said a gang of five suspects walked into the business premises in Helen Joseph Road in Glenwood at about 12.15pm. “The gang entered the business premises posing as customers and positioned themselves around the store with one of the suspects standing at the door,” Mathios said.
“Four of the suspects then pulled out firearms and held up the staff, ordering them to remain calm. The suspects searched the staff and robbed them of cellphones before removing an undisclosed sum of cash from the cash register. The gang also robbed a customer of R400 cash and an iPad,” he said. “The suspects fled the scene of the crime on foot before jumping into a getaway vehicle, a silver/grey Toyota with an unknown registration plate. No injuries were reported.”
Members of the Umbilo SAPS and an Umbilo Crisis Centre debriefer attended the scene of the crime to assist the victims.
Mathios warned business owners and their staff to be alert as there has been a spate of business robberies across Durban over the past two weeks.
He advised business owners not to store cash on the premises, to ensure that CCTV surveillance cameras are in good working order and to remind staff of security procedures. “Business owners are advised to minimise the amount of cash kept on the premises and to erect signs advising that cash is not kept on site. CCTV Surveillance cameras are a crime deterrent and provide security firms and the police with valuable intelligence should an incident occur on the business premises. It’s important to ensure that your camera system is always working optimally,” he said. “It’s important to also regularly brief staff about security procedures so that they know what to do in the event of an emergency.”
