Durban North Tactical duo contribute to downward crime trend

Blue Security’s Durban North Community Tactical Ambassador Darrel Moodley heads up the firm’s tactical team for the area, which has continued to ratchet up its successes in the fight against crime.

Moodley, 27, and his team member Tactical Officer Micheon Makathini, 37, recently arrested an alleged housebreaker wanted in connection with at least 13 housebreaking cases. After a long investigation, the team busted the suspect when he was spotted attempting to jump into a property in the Umhlanga area, during the early hours of Saturday morning. He was handed over to the Durban North SAPS. Moodley said the arrest was a major success for the tactical team.
Moodley grew up in Phoenix, where his desire to protect the local community grew from a young age when he realised the negative impact criminal activity was having on his home town. After matriculating from Havenpark Secondary he knew immediately the career path he wanted to follow. “When I had just finished school at the age of 18 I applied to join the SAPS, but decided on a different path and joined the private security industry,” he said.
Moodley recently joined Blue Security as a Tactical Ambassador, after gaining work experience as an armed response officer at two local security firms, in a position that he felt would help him to further grow his career. “When I first started working as an armed response officer it was challenging dealing with serious criminals such as hijackers and armed robbers and handling crime scenes because of the things we saw, but as I gained experience it became easier to deal with,” he said.
Moodley also plans to study criminology to broaden his knowledge in the field. “I am passionate about making a difference, making people feel safe and assisting them when they need help. I live to take care of the community and revel in catching the criminals that plague our city,” he said.
Moodley is married and has two children. When he is not busy fighting crime, he enjoys spending time honing his skills at the shooting range and working on his vehicle.
Makhathini worked for Fidelity for five years where he started as a security guard before being promoted to an inspector. He later joined a local private security company as an armed response officer, before taking up a post at Enforce Security and then moving to Blue Security in 2016.
Makathini grew up in Ndwedwe and moved to Kwamashu in 1997 where he attended Nqabakazulu Comprehensive School.

Makathini is passionate about fighting crime and decided to join the security industry to make a tangible difference. “We work so hard to provide for our families only to have it taken away by criminals. I decided to work in this industry to fight crime so that people can feel safe to walk peacefully in their neighbourhoods without the fear of being robbed,” he said. As a family man with a partner and three children, his downtime includes going on relaxing outings with his family.
Moodley said the team is already making a difference in Durban North’s fight against crime and is working closely with the SAPS, assisting the police in their stop and search operations. “From the time we started operating in Durban North we have had a large impact and are working closely with SAPS to continue decreasing the area’s crime rate,” he said.
