Durban’s New Bucket List: 10 Things Every Durbanite Should Try

Believe it or not, it is getting closer to that time of year again, the festive season, when hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to Durban, to experience this city. The real question is, what are Durban residents missing? Many people don’t see Durban as some exotic holiday destination, especially if they live here. The truth is that most people barely scratch the surface of what Durban has to offer. That is why this bucket list includes 10 experiences, out of hundreds, that all Durbanites need to have.
Durban's New Bucket List

1. Blueberry Cheesecake at the Blueberry Café

Located along the scenic Midlands Meander, the Blueberry Café passionately serves mouthwatering food, drinks, and desserts. Their famous blueberry cheesecake is possibly the best in KZN and the star dish on their menu.
Understandably, this is a bit further than some people would like to travel for a piece of cake, but this is not just any cake, it is THEE cheesecake. And, some say, it’s the best they’ve ever eaten. So, stop by next time you are in the area and the trip will be well worth it!

2. First Thursdays

You’ve probably heard the phrase “First Thursdays” and wondered what that actually is… Well, First Thursdays happen on the first Thursday of every month, where various vendors get together and put on a showcase of food, music, and art.
The main events happen on Station Drive, in Morningside, and a few other select venues around Durban also join in. First Thursdays is a collaboration of different cultures and this creates a lively atmosphere in the area. So, head over to Station drive next month and see where the atmosphere takes you.

3. Horse Riding on the Beach

Located along the beautiful Dolphin Coast, Horseback Beach Adventures has the perfect outdoor experience where you ride off into the sunset, on horseback. The perfect activity for a fun family trip, or a romantic date for 2. Definitely something that everyone needs to try at least once in a lifetime!

4. Assagay Coffee Farm

Ever wanted to know how coffee is made? Well, you can get a guided tour of a coffee farm and the seed to shelf process in Camperdown, at the Assagay Coffee Farm. There are also selected coffee tasting sessions, so have a look at their Facebook page for the next event.

5. The Big Rush: The Guinness World Records’ tallest swing

Originally, created to wow tourists who visited KZN for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, The Big Rush swing has gained the attention of many international adrenaline junkies. Definitely worth taking the leap at Moses Mabhida Stadium if you are into extreme sports, or just want to try something new and fun.
Just make sure that you wear closed shoes and appropriate clothing. Happy jumping!

6. Breathtaking views at the Stone House Kitchen

The Stone House Kitchen is a rustic-style restaurant with awesome food and coffee, located in Botha’s Hill. The view into the valley is a sight to behold at any time of day. And parents, the best part is that there is a play area, so kids will be kept entertained for hours.
If you have green fingers, the Garden Store may also tickle your fancy. The nursery surrounds the outdoor eating area, with the rainbow of colourful flowers making it even more beautiful.

7. The Litchi Orchard

Located near Salt Rock, The Litchi Orchard is one you can’t miss! Not only is it a fully functioning litchi farm, but it also has a variety of stores, from a handmade furniture shop to a beauty salon. They also host live music and markets quite regularly, so check their Facebook page for dates and make your way over.

8. Sugar Terminal Tour

This tour may be more educational than entertaining, but it is something engrained in Durban’s rich history. Sugar production has always been important in Durban with most of the Sugar Cane farms being based here. This tour of the Sugar Terminal will give you a chance to see how sugar is made and all the different processes it goes through. A sure must-see for anyone with a sweet tooth.

9. Shongweni Market

For a beautiful morning, with rays of sunshine and the smell of breakfast and coffee all around, visit Shongweni Market. It is the perfect way to spend your Saturday morning, and the best part is that you can bring your dogs along. There are little stalls that sell puppy goodies and even food vendors that have something for you and your pooch – so dig in!

10. Xpression on the Beach

Now, it wouldn’t be true to Durban if I didn’t mention anything about our beautiful shoreline. So, the last items on this bucket list are to surf or sup (stand up paddle) with Xpressions on the Beach. This is one of the best ways to experience Durban’s Beachfront and you don’t have to have the core strength or previous experience to enjoy it. Just throw on swimwear and enjoy the waves.
