Durban North business employee ambushed taking out rubbish bags

A gang of armed suspects held up staff at a business premises in Durban North and fled with an undisclosed sum of cash last night.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said four suspects, armed with a firearm, ambushed a staff member of a business in Kenneth Kaunda Road while he was busy placing rubbish outside the building. The robbery occurred at around 8.25pm.
“The suspects held up the staff member at gunpoint and ordered him to take them to where the cash is kept. The suspects then walked into a back office on the premises and held up a manager who was busy cashing up for the day. The suspects ordered the manager to place all the money into a bag,” Mathios said. “The gang also grabbed the manager’s handbag which contained cash and her ID book. They fled the scene of the crime on foot. No injuries were reported. An undisclosed sum of cash was stolen during the robbery.”
Durban North SAPS attended the scene of the crime. Police are investigating a case of robbery.
Mathios advised business owners to regularly brief all staff members on security procedures, especially regarding routines during opening and closing times of the day. “Criminals often observe their targets before striking so it is important to ensure that any weak points in your business’s security procedures and routines are addressed. If you don’t already have CCTV cameras installed on the property, these are a good investment that can go a long way to provide the police and security firms with valuable intelligence about suspects in the event of an incident. Cameras should be installed discreetly at strategic points where entrances, exits and any till points on site can be monitored.”
He added that business owners should attempt to minimise the amount of cash kept onsite and also consider installing signs advising that cash was not kept on the premises.
