6 Tips on how to escape from being tied up and restrained.

We know that crime happens everywhere but we never think it is going to happen to us, until it does. We often read or hear about a home invasion where the members in the house end up being tied and bound. However, knowing how to escape from being tied up could increase a person’s chances of getting out of a dangerous situation and seeking help sooner rather than later.

Read these 6 tips on how to escape from ties and restraints:

  1. Position body parts to avoid being bound tightly: Your hands are more than likely going to be the first area of your body to be tied. If your wrists are being tied in front of you, hold your knuckles from both hands together, and pull your hands in towards your chest. Although it looks like you’re cooperating, this gesture will create a gap between your wrists.
  2. Make yourself big: Tense all of your muscles and take big breaths when you are being tied in order to create a gap. When the attackers aren’t focused on you, relax your muscles and you will have a lot more wriggle room to work with.
  3. Wriggle: Wriggling your wrists back and forth is a good way of loosening the ties. Make sure that this action is executed while the attacker has his back to you or is out of sight.
  4. Cut: Use anything you can find to try and cut free. A car key, a corner on a chair or table or even your teeth. Keep in mind that if you are bound on multiple body parts, it only makes sense to free your hands first in order to unbind the other body parts.
  5. Remove your shoes: If your legs and feet have been bound, take your shoes off. It will be easier to slip through the ropes without having bulky objects to slow down the process. If you are wearing socks, you will be able to slip through the restraints more easily.
  6. Plan your escape: Once free from the ties, don’t just bolt to the first place your brain is telling you to go. You need to be tactical. Take a few seconds to look around and see if it will be easier to jump out of a window of a single story house or which door will be the quickest to get to without needing to pass potential rooms that the attackers might be ransacking.

In a world where everyone is a target, you can never know too many safety tips.
