Blue loves Durban

3 ways to spend time outside this Spring without worrying about safety.

outsideNow that Spring is in the air, it’s time to let the sunshine kiss your skin, get outside more and enjoy the fresh air.

The thought recently occurred to me that after reading about the continuous crime that happens around the greater Durban area, I don’t feel safe spending much time outside the house anymore.

Could you say you feel the same?

Think about it from a safety perspective. Would you rather run the risk of cycling outside and giving a thief the opportunity to knock you off of your bike, potentially cause harm and then proceed to steal your possession when it is safer to go to the gym and cycle on a stationary bike? The same goes for the safety aspects of road running versus treadmill running.

I’m sure we can agree that there are many health benefits that revolve around being in the outdoors, whether it is for improving memory and concentration, increasing vitamin D levels or just stretching our legs a bit on a little stroll.

Unfortunately, the safety risks generally outweigh the pleasure we could experience from spending more of our time in the great outdoors.

Don’t let worrying about your safety affect enjoying and spending time outside with friends and family this Spring. Instead, read these three ways you can spend more time outdoors and be safe in the outside world.

3 Ways to spend time outside this Spring without worrying about safety:

  1. A braai in the back garden. Release your inner South African and light up the braai. Invite some friends and family over after work or at the weekend and have a fun filled day with fantastic company.
  2. Guided group nature walks. Join the Durban Ramblers and get some fresh air while hitting the walking trails that Durban has to offer with a group of like minded people.
  3. Sit on the grass with a blanket. If you’re not in the mood to leave your house, you don’t have to. Pick a blanket and a pillow and lie outside on the grass, read a book and enjoy the sounds that Spring has to offer.
