Blue Security armed response officers, a security guard and neighbourhood watch patroller collectively made five arrests, nabbing suspects following various housebreaking and trespassing incidents across Durban this weekend.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said three suspects were arrested in the Highway area after breaking into business and residential properties, one was arrested in Clairwood and a fifth suspect was arrested in Durban North.
Mathios said an armed response officer responded to the scene of a business burglary in Livingstone Road in Pinetown yesterday, where he spotted a suspect breaking one of the building’s front windows. The incident occurred at around 10.50am.
“The officer immediately called for backup and the team arrested the suspect and recovered pieces of metal that he had removed from the premises. He was handed over to Pinetown SAPS at the scene of the crime,” Mathios said.

About an hour later at around 11.45am, an armed response officer arrested a second suspect who he saw running away from a business premises in Lanner Road in New Germany Industrial Park. “The officer recovered scrap metal which the suspect had thrown over the fence of the property before fleeing. He handed the suspect over to the Pinetown SAPS who attended the scene of the crime.”
Mathios said three suspects had attempted to steal steel templates from a business premises in Jacobs Road in Clairwood at around 2.40pm yesterday. “Two of our armed response officers responded to the scene where they arrested one of the suspects in Floor Road. He had a Durban Solid Waste rubbish bin half filled with steel in his possession which our officer recovered. The other two suspects managed to evade arrest,” Mathios said.
Brighton Beach SAPS attended the scene of the crime and took the suspect into custody.
Mathios said strong team work by one of the company’s armed response officers and a Gillitts 2 neighbourhood watch patroller led to the arrest of a suspect who stole a bicycle from a house in Lynnwood Road at around 1.40pm on Saturday. “The suspect managed to gain entry into the garage and stole a small BMX bicycle. Both the neighbourhood watch patroller and our officer immediately responded to the scene and tracked down the suspect and arrested him,” Mathios said.
A fifth suspect was arrested in Prospect Hall Road in Durban North after he and another suspect had climbed over the fence of a property in an attempt to steal a ladder. The incident occurred at around 9.50am on Saturday. “The suspects fled the scene without taking anything and a security guard near the Athlone Bridge managed to apprehend one of the suspects. The second suspect managed to get away,” Mathios said.
A Chatsworth housebreaker was also arrested last week when a nimble reaction officer jumped over a wall to still find the suspects on the premises.
