Tickled Pink

From an infantry journal

When you’re ducking and diving, tucking and rolling, dodging and crouching, it’s quite easy to imagine yourself performing army drills and being quite good at it. Until someone says this… and you’re quite happy to return to reality. These real lines from an infantry journal will make you think twice.
“You, you and you: panic. The rest of you, come with me.”
A Purple Heart just proves that you were smart enough to think of a plan, stupid enough to try it, and lucky enough to survive.
Don’t ever be the first, don’t ever be the last and don’t ever volunteer to do anything.
Five second fuses only last three seconds.
If the enemy is in range, so are you.
If your attack is going well, you have walked into an ambush.
Odd objects attract fire – never lurk behind one.
The difficult we do immediately. The impossible takes a little while longer.
We are not retreating, we are advancing in another direction.
Try to look unimportant, they may be low on ammo.
Bravery is being the only one who knows when you’re afraid.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you’re on fire.
Never trade luck for skill.
Don’t look conspicuous: it draws fire.
