Love is celebrated across the world on Valentine’s Day, the 14th of February (today). On this day, people get to set aside their differences and make time to spend with their loved ones and show them how much they love each other. Most people think that it is a sales stunt by shops, but this celebration dates back to ancient Rome where a compassionate cleric named Valentine died for love more than a thousand years ago.
Legend has it that Saint Valentine noticed the trauma of young lovers who had been banned from marrying each other. He couldn’t stand seeing the couples heartbroken and started to meet these couples in secret meeting places to join them in holy matrimony. It was not long until people started to find out about these secret marriages and arrested St Valentine for being a “friend of lovers”.
While he was in prison waiting for his execution, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. She was distraught to find out about his deadly fate. On the eve of his execution he wrote her a sonnet as a farewell message to his love saying ‘From Your Valentine,’ a phrase that lived ever after. Valentine is believed to have been executed on February 14, 270 AD.
You don’t have to spend a fortune to show your loved one that you love them. Celebrate love and the fact that you can be together freely. Don’t fall into the gift trap with overpriced chocolates and roses. It’s a celebration of being able to be together. So now that you know it’s not just a sales stunt, where and how can you celebrate Valentine’s Day in Durban?
