Armed Response

An alleged housebreaker who appeared to be high on drugs was injured after he jumped from the second storey balcony of a residential complex in Shulton Park near Doonside in a bid to evade arrest at the weekend.
Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said an armed response officer had responded to the scene of the crime at 3.39am on Saturday after an intruder tampered with the electric fence, alerting its control centre to the security breach. “Just as our officer was about to inspect the fence our control centre staff directed him to one of the units in the complex,” he said.
“When he arrived at the property he found two residents in a scuffle with a suspect who was trying to escape. The residents managed to restrain the suspect and our officer handcuffed him and proceeded to walk outside with the suspect. But when they reached the verandah the suspect jumped off the balcony and fell on his head on the concrete floor below. A Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) member took the suspect to the police station and on the way he again tried to escape attempting several times to jump out of the moving vehicle,” he said.
Jackson said it appeared that the suspect was high on drugs which had emboldened him to attempt to escape even when he had already been handcuffed. “Provincial paramedics treated him for his injuries at the Amanzimtoti police station where he was handed over to the police,” he said.
Jackson said two cellphones were found on the suspect who had been trying to steal a laptop when the resident had disturbed him on his property.
