Blue Security Launches South Africa’s First High-Visibility Highway Patrol Unit
Durban, South Africa — Blue Security is proud to announce the official launch of the Blue Highway Patrol Units, to enhance protection, and introduce real-time intelligence across the N2 and N3.
As two of the country’s most critical economic corridors, the N2 and N3 support high volumes of commuter traffic, freight and logistics movement, and tourism. However, these routes also present increasing safety challenges, including vehicle breakdowns in vulnerable areas, roadside accidents, criminal activity, and delays in coordinated response. The absence of consistent, visible safety presence has contributed to growing concern among motorists and stakeholders alike.

The Blue Highway Patrol Unit has been developed to address this gap. Operating across key sections from Amanzimtoti to Spaghetti Junction and Umhlanga on the N2, and from Marianhill Toll Plaza to Spaghetti Junction, the initiative introduces a proactive and visible safety presence on some of South Africa’s busiest corridors.
Each patrol vehicle is staffed by a highly trained armed response officer, specifically equipped to manage roadside incidents, provide immediate assistance, and ensure the safety of motorists in high-risk environments. Officers are issued with essential protective and response equipment, including firearms, bulletproof vests, handcuffs, pepper spray, and communication devices. All officers will undergo training in key areas such as basic firefighting, first aid, and traffic control, with further development planned in advanced driving techniques to enhance response capability on major routes.
The patrol vehicles themselves are fully equipped to support on-road incidents and ensure scene safety. Each unit carries critical safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, traffic cones, and danger tape, allowing officers to effectively secure and manage roadside situations. To maximise visibility and ensure a strong deterrent presence, all vehicles are fitted with high-intensity white and amber flashing lights, making them clearly identifiable in both day and night conditions.

The Blue Highway Patrol Unit is further supported by a coordinated 24/7 response network, ensuring that officers are never operating in isolation. Metro Police and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) serve as primary support partners for law enforcement and traffic-related incidents. In the event of breakdowns, recovery services are facilitated through established partners. Medical emergencies are supported through dedicated ambulance services, with Redline N3 providing coverage along the N3 corridor and ALS responding along the N2. This integrated support structure ensures that every incident is managed efficiently, with the appropriate resources deployed in real time.
This initiative represents a shift from traditional reactive security models to a more intelligent, preventative approach. By combining visible deterrence with data-driven insights and integrated operational support, the Blue Highway Patrol Unit delivers a smarter, more responsive layer of protection across key transport routes.

Henk Van Bemmelen, CEO of Blue Security, emphasised the significance of the initiative:
“The Blue Highway Patrol Unit is a significant step forward in how we approach safety on our national corridors. This initiative is about more than visibility, it is about combining trained personnel, technology, and real-time intelligence to create a safer environment for motorists. We are proud to lead a solution that not only protects people but also supports the broader movement towards smarter, more connected infrastructure.”
The Blue Highway Patrol Unit also creates opportunities for collaboration, enabling partners to align with a safety-driven platform that delivers both social impact and measurable visibility.
The launch marks a new chapter in corridor safety, positioning Blue Security at the forefront of innovation in the industry. With thousands of journeys taking place daily along these routes, the Blue Highway Patrol Unit is committed to ensuring that every journey is safer, more supported, and better protected.
