The battery backup of an alarm system is essential to provide power to the alarm system in the event of power outages. It also powers the device responsible for sending signals to our control centre. If the battery is not functioning correctly due to age or prolonged power outages, it will not power the alarm system. Furthermore, it will not be able to send any signals to the control centre.

Alarm systems and signal-transmitting devices will automatically shut down when the battery voltage ranges between 10.2 and 10.7 volts. Voltage in this range means the battery can be partially dead and cause your alarm system and signal-transmitting device to shut down.

It would be best to immediately replace the battery once you are aware of a “battery low” condition. Speak to our technical department for assistance.

When the battery is below an acceptable threshold, and when the power returns, the alarm system will, in most instances, create an alarm or panic condition if in the armed state. These signals will be sent to the control centre if the battery has sufficient power after the power failure. If the battery is in good condition, this will drastically reduce the chances of false alarms during power restoration.

During periods of power failures, especially load shedding, the following have a severe impact on service delivery:

 

  • Control Centre operators are unable to connect with clients due to cellphone towers being down in various areas at different times. This will also impact the delivery of SMS Notifications.
  • When the power returns, multiple false alarm activations are received due to faulty alarm batteries, as explained above.
  • Delays in phoning clients are caused due to the influx of clients we need to respond to during these periods.
  • There are delays in reaction times due to multiple false alarms activating when the power returns.
