7 Technologies that improve your home’s perimeter protection

Your home is your haven, your castle, the one place where you can kick off your shoes, sit back, and relax at the end of a long day at work. So, protecting your private space, from the perimeter right to the heart of your home, is obviously a top priority to create the safest haven where your family is out of reach from unwanted intruders, who unfortunately lurk in our neighbourhoods.
Amanzimtoti families have been the target of multiple housebreaking and trespassing incidents in recent months, so now is a good a time as any to assess the state of your home’s perimeter security to see whether you need to make any improvements.
According to Blue Security’s latest crime statistics, there were 123 crime incidents in the area reported to the company over the past three months. Of these crimes, 36 were categorised as residential housebreakings, 11 as attempted residential housebreakings, and 30 as trespassing incidents. Residential housebreaking and trespassing were the two main crimes committed in the suburb for the period according to the statistics.
But there have been inroads made in the fight against crime.
Blue Security marketing director Darren Lategan said the company and police have also arrested a string of criminals in the suburb over the months, including three suspects who were wanted for multiple housebreakings.
Lategan said residents had also played a vital role in the arrests by being vigilant and reporting crime, but more could probably still be done to secure homes against potential housebreakers. “If your home is adequately secured to detect an intruder on your property before he gets a chance to break into your home, this contributes to the fight against crime. All a trespasser needs to do to escalate his crime and become a housebreaker or an armed robber, is to force open a window undetected and grab a kitchen knife, if he is not armed already.”
“But you can save yourself the stress and anxiety of coming face to face with an intruder if you have adequate street and perimeter security to provide you with an early warning system. Importantly too, if a trespasser is arrested on your property, take the time to open a case against him, as this will strengthen the police’s ability to bring criminals to book before they escalate their crimes to the next level,” he said.
Lategan provided the following quick checklist to help you prioritise your different home security layers and take advantage of the latest technology.
1. Get together with your neighbours and ask your security company about the process of installing CCTV street surveillance cameras on your block. It’s quite cost effective when resources are pooled.
2. Consider installing CCTV cameras on your own property. The cost of small CCTV surveillance cameras has dropped in recent years making these an affordable addition to security around entrance gates.
3. Anti-gatecrashing kits linked to your home alarm system provide an early warning system if anyone tampers with your gate.
4. Make sure your electric fence is in good working order and connected to your house alarm.
5. External infra-red intruder detection beams provide another with an early warning system. These strategically located outdoor beams will sound the alarm if an intruder enters your property.
6. Strip beams across windows and doors provide a further external layer of security sounding the alarm before an intruder gains entry into your home.
7. Join your neighbourhood watch group and participate in their social media groups such as those on WhatsApp. Be sure to report any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood and respond to others in need by calling your security company for help.
