Vigilant Malvern neighbour alerts authorities of armed gang robbery

After authorities were alerted and swiftly responded to the scene of the crime, an armed gang robbery was intercepted which led to the arrest of an alleged robber after the gang held up a family in a home invasion in Becton Drive in Malvern last night.

Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the family was at home when the gang of three suspects walked into the house through the front door which had been left open. The incident occurred at around 8.50pm.

“The gang held up the family at gunpoint and forced them to lie on the floor. One of the suspects pressed the gate button and opened the driveway gate to let in their accomplices who were driving a grey VW Polo,” Mathios said.

“The suspects stole items of brassware and placed them into pillowcases, as well as two bottles of expensive alcohol. They picked up the television and a surround sound system but then left it on the lounge floor and fled the scene when a neighbour heard the scream of one of the victims and alerted the police,” Mathios said.

“The suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled to the back of the property where they fence hopped into a neighbouring property.”
The SAPS dog unit managed to track down and arrest one of the suspects. No injuries were reported.

“Malvern SAPS are investigating the case,” Mathios said.
