Armed Response

“Free yourself, free others and serve every day,” these are the three principles Nelson Mandela lived his life by.
In honour of the late president, this Thursday July 18th, South Africans and people the world over will spend 67 minutes of their day dedicated to serving others. This year marks 10 years of Mandela Day, declared an international day by the United Nations in November 2009.
The Official Nelson Mandela Day Goals for 2019-2029:
In an attempt to move away from the previously random and individualised approach to Mandela Day, the following goals have been developed with the intent to move toward a more sustainable approach to addressing the issues that affect our society.
1. Provision of quality education for all children.
2. All children in Early Childhood Development (ECD) to have access to learning resources for development.
3. Reduce hunger in families through the provision of nutritious meals.
4. Eliminate malnutrition and stunting in young children.
5. Provide safe shelter for families to live and thrive in.
6. Eliminate homelessness.
7. Ensure sanitation that is safe in every school.
8. Enable access of safe sanitation to all communities.
9. Dedicate more resources to supporting poverty eradication projects.
10. Increase resources allocated to the provision of ECD in disadvantaged communities.
With these goals in mind, how can you spend your 67 minutes in the beautiful city of Durban?
Durban has a number of organisations who are always in need of a helping hand or two. The online platform “Forgood” will help you connect with a verified Non-Profit organisation, for which you can volunteer your time, skills, make donations or give back in your own terms by creating an offer to the causes in your area. Similarly, the “My hands and heart” is a youth platform that makes it easy for young people to connect with causes and make a sustainable contribution.
So whether you’re spending the 67 minutes reading to children, picking up waste along our gorgeous coastline or running a weekend race to raise funds…
“It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it. Mandela Day will not be a holiday but a day devoted to service.” – Nelson Mandela.
