Response officer disturbs gang of Morningside car thieves

A Blue Security armed response officer saved the day when he disturbed a gang of car thieves that was in the process of stealing a pensioner’s vehicle in Morningside, Sunday afternoon. This being the most recent report involving vehicle theft,  following another incident in which our Highway Tactical team tracked down and recovered a stolen vehicle.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the armed response officer was on a routine patrol when he noticed suspicious activity in Venice Road at around 1.20pm on Sunday. “The officer noticed a white Toyota Corolla that was parked on the pavement and another vehicle parked nearby with a suspect sitting in the second vehicle. He drove further down the road and then made a u-turn to go back and investigate,” Mathios said.

“As he approached the vehicle, the door flung open and a suspect ran out of the vehicle towards the Toyota Corolla. He jumped into the Toyota Corolla and the vehicle sped off. Upon further investigation the officer found that the lock of the driver’s door and the vehicle’s ignition had been damaged,” Mathios said.
Mathios said the officer then managed to make contact with the owner of the vehicle to report the incident. He commended the officer for his vigilance which led to the prevention of the vehicle theft.
“We are committed to proactive policing to fight crime in the communities that we serve and we trust that this latest incident will send the message to criminals that they cannot operate freely in our neighbourhoods without being detected,” Mathios said.
Mathios advised residents to ensure that their vehicles are fitted with anti-theft security measures such as gear locks and steering locks, especially when parked in public places on the side of the road. “Installing security measures may not prevent vehicle theft but it can go some way to deter criminals from targeting your vehicle as they seek to minimise the time taken to commit the crime to avoid arrest,” he said.
