Suspect tracked down after spotted breaking into car on CCTV cameras
Blue Security armed response officers arrested two alleged thieves, one of whom was tracked down and arrested after being spotted breaking into a vehicle on CCTV cameras, and the other who had a remote that opened the gate of a resident’s home, on the Berea at the weekend.
Suspect arrested in 11th Avenue.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the most recent incident in 11th Avenue in Morningside, teamwork between Blue Security’s control centre staff and an armed response officer led to the arrest of a suspect who was spotted breaking into a vehicle on a Blue “Eye in the Sky” CCTV surveillance camera. The incident occurred at 6am on Saturday.
“The suspect was seen on camera breaking into the vehicle and our control centre staff then relayed a description of the alleged thief to our armed response officer on the ground. He patrolled the area and found the suspect in 10th Avenue in possession of a stolen pair of takkies and a cap. He fled when he saw our officer approaching him but our officer managed to arrest him,” Mathios said.
The suspect was handed over to the Berea SAPS at the scene.
In a separate incident, the suspect with the remote had been spotted standing outside the gate of a house in Wanless Road in Glenmore at around 8.20pm on Friday night. “When our armed response officer approached the suspect, he claimed he was only digging through a rubbish bin bag outside the property and not committing any crime,” Mathios said.
“But when our officer searched him he found two different sets of remotes, a Garmin and a two-plate stove. When the officer tested the remotes, one of them opened the driveway gate to the resident’s property. The suspect then claimed that he had found the remote in the bin but the resident did not believe the story and requested that the suspect be taken in for questioning,” Mathios said.
“The resident wanted to check whether he was possibly linked to a previous burglary when copper pipes had been stolen from the property. Our officer arrested the suspect and handed him over to Metro police who took him into custody,” Mathios said.
