Armed Response

There were multiple armed robberies on the rise Durban over the week.
Two women were lucky to escape unharmed after being victims of an armed robbery in Glenmore, Durban on Saturday, 07 November.
“It seems that the suspects had gained entry by letting themselves into the premises, with a key they had, in the early hours of Saturday morning,” said Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, “a Blue Security armed-response officer had arrived at the scene to be informed by the caretaker that the women had been tied up by two intruders armed with firearms and knives.”
“The suspects had entered the property over the back fence before letting themselves in with a key in their possession,” Mathios said.
“The suspects fled after stealing a substantial amount of cash, two cellphones, takkies, and various items of clothing,” he said, investigations are continuing.”
In a separate incident, just before closing time on Sunday evening, staff and customers were held up during a robbery at a store on the Bluff, in Durban.
“An unconfirmed number of suspects robbed employees and shoppers of cellphones and other items of value before fleeing in a white Ford Bantam bakkie,” Mathios said.
“The incident occurred shortly before closing time at 6pm,” he said.
In an unrelated incident, north of Durban on Sunday morning, a large armed gang were the perpetrators of a robbery at a high-end store.
“Whilst attending to an alarm activation at a coffee shop on Palm Boulevard, Umhlanga, shortly before 10am a Blue Security armed response officer was informed that a nearby high-end store had been targeted by a gang of armed robbers,” Mathios said.
“The gang of at least seven men, armed with rifles, forced their way into the shop and removed an undisclosed amount of jewellery before fleeing in an awaiting getaway vehicle,” he said.
“No shots were fired and no-one was harmed during the incident. SAPS and other emergency personnel attended the scene and the case is currently under investigation,” he said.
In Gillitts, outside Durban central, a sharp-eyed patrolling Blue Security officer recovered a number of stolen items after seeing them lying on a verge.
“Some investigating of the items (with the assistance of a local neighbourhood watch member) led the officer to the address from where they had been removed,” Mathios said.
“Further sleuthing revealed that two suspects had entered the complex at around 1am on Saturday morning. They had then proceeded to one of the units and gained entry by forcing open a rear bedroom window and breaking the burglar guard,” he said.
“A rear sliding door and trelligate was also found open and unlocked. The interior had been ransacked,” he said.
“The homeowner was out of town at the time of the incident. Items recovered included a microwave, two backpacks, kitchen appliances, liquor, and household tools,” he said.
“The items were placed back inside and the home secured awaiting the return of the owner who will follow up with SAPS,” he said.
