A botched hijacking which took place on Moore Road in Durban, had Blue Security armed response officers taking cover.
An e-hailing taxi driver narrowly escaped injury and the loss of his vehicle when the presence of a Blue Security armed-response unit nearby foiled an attempted hijacking on the Berea in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“A Blue Security armed-response officer was about to exit a service station on Che Guevara Road in Bulwer when he witnessed the attempted hijacking taking place,” said Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios.
The incident occurred when an e-hailing taxi driver had stopped to collect passengers who had requested a ride.
“Four suspects had lured the driver under false pretences, posing as passengers. When the driver stopped, one of the suspects opened the back door of the vehicle for a female passenger and then opened the front passenger door. As he was getting in the front another suspect ran up and pointed a firearm at the driver,” Mathios said.
A struggle ensued and the driver managed to get out of his vehicle and run to the nearby service station. This was when the Blue Security response officer saw the incident occur.
“When the suspects realized the officer had seen them they began shooting at him. He got out of his vehicle and returned fire. With the arrival of two backup officers they were successful in apprehending two of the suspects,” he said.
Further investigation of the crime scene saw one homemade revolver recovered which was found hidden under a rock next to a tree.
“The remaining two suspects are still at large after making their escape in their getaway vehicle,” he said.
A member of Umbilo SAPS attended the scene and two suspects were handed over for further processing.
