Quick Thinking Tactical Officer Thwarts Cable Theft in Pinetown

Criminals operating under the cover of darkness were no match for the vigilance of Blue Security’s Tactical Team, who thwarted a suspect intent on cable theft in Pinetown this week.

In the early hours of Tuesday, 18 June 2025, at approximately 02:10, one of our Tactical Officers was on routine patrol along Caversham Road in Pinetown when he spotted a suspicious obstruction across the road.

Upon closer inspection, it became clear that a length of Telkom cable—about 60 metres—had been cut and left on the ground. Overhead lines along the road had been tampered with, indicating a clear attempt to remove and flee with the infrastructure. However, the suspects quickly abandoned the scene when they noticed the approaching Blue Security vehicle and disappeared into the surrounding area.

The officer immediately secured the site and ensured the safety of the scene. A CPI investigator from SAPS who was already in the area was contacted and took custody of the recovered cable. A formal case has since been opened.

Cable theft not only damages public infrastructure but also poses a serious safety and security risk by plunging areas into darkness and cutting off essential services. These disruptions create vulnerable gaps that criminals may exploit for further offences.

Residents in the Pinetown area are urged to report any suspicious behaviour around utility poles, especially during the early hours. Together with our community and SAPS, we will continue to clamp down on infrastructure-related crimes.
