Robbers flee Everton home invasion after mistakenly pressing panic button

A resident was injured when armed robbers assaulted him during the Everton home invasion in Hazel Road the early hours of this morning.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said the resident was awoken by the sound of his dogs barking before 5am this morning. “The resident got up and went to the kitchen where he was accosted by three suspects, one of them armed with a pellet gun, who tied him up with electrical cables and forced him to sit on the floor,” Mathios.
“The suspects assaulted the resident and ransacked the house. They loaded two televisions and other valuables into the resident’s vehicle. One of the suspects then took the resident’s remote to open the gate, but accidentally pressed the panic button on the remote. The gang fled the scene on foot, empty handed. ER24 paramedics transported the victim to hospital for medical treatment,” Mathios said.
Mathios said the suspects had gained entry by jumping over the front gate of the property before forcing open a lounge window and burglar bar to get inside the house. Hillcrest SAPS attended the scene of the crime.
In a separate house robbery in Igwababa Road in Kloof at around 4.20pm yesterday, a resident was accosted by two suspects in her garden cottage. “The resident heard the sound of glass breaking and went into the kitchen where two suspects confronted her, demanding cash and cellphones. She handed over cash and two cellphones to the suspects who then fled the scene,” Mathios said.
Mathios said it appeared that the suspects had jumped over the front fence to gain entry into the premises.
Mathios advised residents to ensure that external beams are activated on their properties for an early warning system. “External infrared beams are an additional layer of security that will alert you to the presence of intruders before they are able to break into your house, enabling you to avoid confrontation with them. Having an early warning buys you time to lock yourself inside a ‘safe’ room inside your home from where you can call for help.”
