Robbers kick senior Umhlanga woman during home invasion

Armed robbers assaulted a senior Umhlanga woman and her gardener after they stormed into her home last night.
Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said a gang of four armed men, wearing caps and gloves, derailed the driveway gate to gain entry into the Ridge Road home. The incident occurred at around 8.30pm.
“The gang then entered the house through a security gate and door which were closed, but not locked. They assaulted the resident, kicking her and ordering her to lie face down on the floor. They also assaulted the gardener, who lives on the premises, and forced him to lie on the floor,” Mathios said. “The gang ransacked the house and fled with jewellery and cellphones in a white Ford Figo. No visible injuries were reported by the victims.”

This is the second incident in Umhlanga recently where armed robbers gained entry via the driveway gate. Suspects tampered with a gate motor to open the gate of a home in Ridge Road last week.
Mathios advised residents to always keep doors and security gates locked, especially at night, and to install a gate crashing kit for an early warning system. “It’s important to make sure that you have several layers of security around your home to give you an early warning. A gate crashing kit is an inexpensive device which can be fitted to the gate and linked to the alarm system. If anyone tampers with the gate, the device will activate the home alarm system, alerting you to the presence of intruders,” Mathios said.
“External infrafred beams will also alert you if anyone enters the garden. It’s also vital to make sure doors, or at least, security gates are locked, particularly at night,” Mathios said.
In a separate incident in Chartwell Drive in the early hours of this morning, a resident heard noises inside his home and disturbed a burglar who had entered his property at around 3.50am. “The burglar forced open a sliding door and security gate to gain entry and stole a cellphone, wrist watch and other items, some of which he dropped as he fled the scene when the resident went to investigate,” Mathios said.
