Armed Response

South Africans don’t celebrate Halloween in the traditional sense like other parts of the world, but even here the horror theme creeps into mall play areas, sneaks up at events and transforms fancy dress parties around this time of the year. Some communities even cordon off their streets to create their own safe, dedicated trick-or-treat avenues.
Whether the family is attending a spooky school event, going to a Halloween themed show such as at uShaka, or keeping it close to home with a local trick-or-treat adventure, keep these tips in mind to help prevent a real horror this Halloween.
1. Make sure your little ones’ costumes fit well and won’t get snagged, tangled or cause them to stumble. Let them wear comfy shoes they can walk, play and run in all night with the laces double-tied to avoid them tripping in the dark.
2. Batman, Iron Man and Catwoman might be some favourite choices, but avoid actual masks that could make it hard for them to see and even breathe. Use non-toxic make-up instead. If they’re wearing hats or wigs, check that they’re made from fire resistant materials.
3. Light ‘em up, up, up! Unless it’s a suitable accessory that the character actual wore, your child probably wouldn’t like it, but make them as visible as possible. If they will be walking outside, give them a flashlight, glow sticks or any shining objects that would make them noticeable to a motorist.
4. Don’t let your kids attend any function without you, or someone you trust with your life. Kids could also easily get lost in crowds, write your number on their arm and paint clear nail polish over it, and point out an obvious landmark where you would meet up if they lost you.
5. Sweets will be received, by the pounds. Scan through the candy to look for any dodgy sweets. Chuck out any that aren’t in their wrappers or looks like they have been tampered with.
6. Copious amounts of candy will be consumed, so either (try to) ration early on or brace yourself for the impending energy spike! A sugar rush is bound to make them even more excitable and less focused, keep a close eye on them and remind them to only run around and play in safe designated areas.
How ever you are spending Halloween, have fun but be safe, alert and responsible.
