Several housebreakings reported in Durban North

A Blue Security armed response officer arrested an alleged thief in Durban North last week.
Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the officer had been patrolling just after 9am on Thursday when he noticed a suspect at the corner of Village Way and Round the Green, carrying various items including a white pool chair, a computer keyboard, an extension cable and clothes. When our officer stopped the suspect to question him about the goods he said he had picked them up out of a rubbish bin. Our officer apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the Durban North SAPS at the scene,” he said.
Jackson added that reaction officers had responded to several housebreakings in Durban North over the past week. Incidents were reported in Blue Ridge Road in Glen Ashley, in Chelsea Drive and Kensington Drive in Durban North and in Ambleside Avenue in La Lucia.
“Housebreakers gatecrashed the properties to gain entry and fled with televisions, laptops, jewellery and a gaming console. Fortunately in two of the incidents residents managed to press their panic buttons in time and the housebreakers fled without taking anything,” he said.
Jackson advised residents to fit anti-gatecrashing kits to their gates and to install CCTV Surveillance Cameras at the front of their properties. “Cameras serve as a deterrent against crime and an anti-gatecrashing kit linked to the main house alarm system will sound the alarm if anyone tries to tamper with your gate,” he said.
Jackson advised residents not to leave valuables like handbags and tablets lying next to doors and windows as opportunistic criminals could “fish” these out of the window. “We had a case in La Lucia last week where a thief used to stick to try and fish a camera out of a window but he fled when the resident spotted him,” he said.
