Armed Response

A gardener who tried to fend off two armed suspects was shot in the leg during an armed robbery at a home on the Berea, on Thursday morning.
“The incident occurred when two armed trespassers derailed the front main gate and entered the property,” said Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios.
“Blue Security reaction officers rushed to the scene in response to a panic activation,” he said.
“The suspects pretended to be enquiring about a home rental. Once inside, one of the men produced a firearm, and a gardener working onsite was shot in the leg when he attempted to intervene. The suspects fled in an awaiting luxury vehicle and one cellphone was taken during the incident,” Mathios said.
“Paramedics arrived to attend to the victim who, once stabilised, was transported to a hospital for further treatment. The homeowner required trauma counselling,” said Mathios.
“Mayville SAPS attended the scene and investigations are continuing,” he said.
In a separate incident, one shot was fired during an attempted break-in at a fast-food outlet in New Germany, early on Friday morning.
“A Blue Security reaction officer responded to a call out and arrived at the scene to find the main front door had been forced open and damaged,” said Andreas Mathios.
“An eyewitness had seen at least two suspects arrive at the takeaway outlet in a red Toyota Corolla. The suspects fired one shot but no-one was injured. Further inspection confirmed that entry had not been gained and nothing stolen during the incident,” he said.
In another incident at an industrial park in Valley View Road, New Germany, a security guard was lucky to escape unharmed after being shot at in the early hours of Friday morning.
“The security guard had been in his guard room when he heard a noise and observed one suspect behind the structure. He also saw two more suspects outside at the back of the property,” Mathios said.
“The guard ran to the front of the building and one suspect fired a shot. Fortunately, the guard was not injured and no damage done to the property. SAPS Pinetown attended the scene but no case has been opened,” he said.
