Spike in vehicle theft across Durban

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said there had been a spike in vehicle thefts and thefts out of vehicles over the past week, with 16 incidents reported to the company from Doonside to Durban North.
In the latest incident a Bluff resident allegedly shot and injured a car thief after a gang of car thieves derailed his driveway gate on Monday morning.
Jackson said a gang of eight car thieves had derailed the gate of a property in Marine Drive at around 4.04am.
“The car thieves managed to steal a Totoya Fortuner and were in the process of stealing a second vehicle when a resident disturbed them. Shots were fired and one of the car thieves was injured during the shooting but managed to flee the scene,” he said. Brighton Beach SAPS attended the scene of the crime.
Incidents were also reported in Westville, Glenwood, Pinetown, Morningside and Glenmore.
“We advise residents to try not to park their vehicles on the street if possible and to ensure that their property gates are fitted with an anti-gate crashing kit connected to the house alarm for an early warning in case intruders tamper with the gate. If you have a garage lock your vehicles inside overnight,” he said.
“It’s also important at this time of the year when people are focused with renewed energy on work and school routines to remain focused on security and to be sure to remove any valuables from parked vehicles since these are not safe in plain sight or even in the boot,” he said.
