Family members and friends of the student Charmaine Erick are at a loss for words after the 21-year-old was almost kidnapped in Rembrandt Park, north of Johannesburg, last Tuesday afternoon.
Watch this video of Erick’s narrow escape after a car pulls up next to the student and asks her to get in the vehicle.
Keep these four tips top of mind if you need to walk on the road.
- Try and find a walking buddy. Whether you need to walk home, to the shops, to work or anywhere, it is never a good idea to walk alone.
- Walk during high traffic times. Firstly, if the roads are more congested, it will be more difficult for a kidnapper to drive away after abducting someone. Secondly, more people would see the abduction happen which in turn would increase the likelihood of action being taken.
- Don’t walk and WhatsApp at the same time. Yes, you could be mugged for your phone, but using your phone while walking means that you’re distracted and being distracted immediately makes you more of a target. This goes for listening to music with your headphones in too.
- Download the Blue Security FREE panic app. If you’re out anywhere in the city and find yourself in an emergency situation, the app uses your mobile phone’s GPS to pinpoint your exact location and sends a signal to our control centre for action to be taken.
