Blue Security Command Centre received information regarding a broken-down truck on the M4 that was reportedly being targeted in an attempted robbery by two armed males on foot.
A Blue Security Highway Assist unit was immediately mobilised from Amanzimtoti to investigate. While no broken-down truck was located at the reported position, the officer noticed two individuals on the roadway who appeared to be in the process of being robbed.
The officer immediately intervened and pursued the two suspects, who fled on foot towards a nearby sports ground together with the complainants.
The suspects entered the sports grounds, where the Highway Assist officer pursued them and successfully apprehended one suspect who was found in possession of a firearm. A struggle ensued during the apprehension, resulting in the officer sustaining an injury to his left shoulder.
The second suspect managed to evade apprehension and fled the scene.
Tactical Command was immediately notified and additional Blue Security units were dispatched to assist. Wentworth SAPS was also contacted and attended the scene.
The apprehended suspect was handed over to Wentworth SAPS, while the complainants were advised to open a criminal case. The reported stolen property included a wallet and router belonging to one complainant, while another reported that his cellphone, bag and cash had been stolen.
The Highway Assist officer was assessed by ALS Paramedics after reporting difficulty moving his left arm. He was found to have sustained a dislocated shoulder, treated at the scene and subsequently transported to hospital for further medical attention.
