Umbilo Hijacking Thwarted: Response Officer gives Chase to Firearm Wielding Suspects

In a separate incident in Umbilo a Blue Security armed response officer was successful in thwarting a hijacking whilst on routine patrol.
“The officer had spotted two men behaving suspiciously when approaching a vehicle in the Umbilo area on Thursday night,” Mathios said.  “On noticing the Blue Security reaction officer one of the suspects suddenly approached pointing a firearm at him. The motorist yelled at the reaction officer telling him that he was being hijacked,” he said.
“He called for backup and made a U-turn when he realized the suspects had been trying to hijack the driver and vehicle. The officer immediately gave chase,” he said. “The suspects abandoned their efforts at hijacking the vehicle a short distance away and disappeared into the community. Backup and assistance from other law enforcement agencies, Metro and SAPS arrived at the scene a short while later,” he said.
“No-one was injured at the scene and the suspects managed to get away. The hijacked vehicle was recovered at the scene and a case of hijacking is being investigated,” Mathios said.
