Warning as hijackers target Durban motorists in driveways

Blue Security has warned residents to be vigilant when arriving and leaving home following two hijackings of motor vehicles in driveways earlier this week.
Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said hijackers had struck in broad daylight in Jersey Road in Sherwood at around 10.50am on Wednesday. “Hijackers in a Class C Mercedes Benz pulled up and jammed the victims in as they were trying to leave the property in their vehicle. They held up the victims at gunpoint and fled in their vehicle,” he said.
Jackson said a motorist who had just arrived home with his daughter was hijacked in Essenwood Road on the Berea at around 8.45pm on Wednesday. “Three hijackers arrived in two vehicles – a red BMW and a yellow BMW – and approached the victims from behind before hijacking them of their vehicle. The hijackers also fled with handbags and house keys which were in the vehicle,” he said.
Berea SAPS attended the scene of the crime.
Jackson advised residents to be vigilant and on the lookout for any suspicious individuals or vehicles parked near their properties before opening the gate. “Always first stop parallel to the kerb and wait for your gates to open before turning into your driveway so that you can quickly drive away if anyone approaches your vehicle. If you pull into the driveway while waiting for the gates to open you are far more vulnerable to being blocked in and held up by hijackers,” he said.
“If you do notice any suspicious activity near your property when you get home, rather take a drive around the block and if the individuals have not moved on by the time you arrive back home report the matter to your security company and the police,” Jackson said.
