Durban’s debut Welcoming of The Whales Festival promises to provide families with a fun day out in the sun on Bluff’s Anstey’s beach this weekend.
The festival, which is takes place on Saturday just before the start of the fourth World Cetacean Alliance (WCA) conference that runs in the city from 24-29 June, is set to become an annual winter event.
WCA and the Sodurba Community Tourism Organization (Durban South Tourism) is hosting the beach event to celebrate the arrival of whales on their migration route along the KZN coastline. Activities will include a market with foods stalls and various educational, art and cultural events.
Explore the wonders of our rock pools by joining the Rocky Shores Walk at the beach. Registration is at 8am at Anstey’s Square. Entrance to the walk is R35.
The conference theme is “Towards Responsible Tourism for Cetaceans”, and will bring together global stakeholders from whale conservation and welfare backgrounds, the whale watching industry, governmental organisations and travel and tourism representatives to share evidence and discuss strategies to protect these creatures globally.
As part of the conference the WCA’s Whale Heritage Sites Summit will explore opportunities for the development of new sites in Africa and worldwide.
